I have a friend who put out a Facebook request for suggestions of what to spend $2.00 on for apps for his iPhone. He specified that they could be paid or free, and could include $.99 apps, combined to make $2.00. I went a little crazy, and came up with the ULTIMATE $2.00 iPhone App Guide. These are great apps that won't break the bank, and are in my opinion, the reason that the iPhone is such a strong platform.

Here it is (organized by category, of course!).

I have spent a few days with Chrome for Mac. I have a few observations. First, the negatives. Chrome is not noticeably faster than Safari or Firefox. I am running it on a 2.53Ghz Core2 Duo Mac, running Snow Leopard. This is not a hardware issue. The only site I have had problems with, on Chrome, has been Gmail. The problems have been regular and frequent. That's irony. When Chrome is minimized, and I click on the Chrome dock icon, the toolbar opens, but the window stays minimized. I don't like not being able to drag the favicon to the desktop and make it a shortcut. I don't like the way downloads work in Chrome. I want to be able to set my downloads window to clear after downloads have completed. I also don't want to see my downloads in the main window... even at the bottom. Give me my screen space back.

With the negatives out of the way, I will get to the positives. Overall, Chrome has been stable, easy to learn, and functional. Considering every browser has issues, Chrome is a worthy contender. Like most other browsers, Chrome makes Internet Explorer (any version) look pitiful.

So far, the negatives outweigh the positives, but I won't give up yet. I will continue to use Chrome… along with Safari and Firefox. It is always good to have a few good browsers, and I think Chrome has a bright future.

My little application, iTunes Startup, has been really popular over the past couple of years. I got an email from a user the other day, asking if it could be used for internet radio. While it is possible to modify iTunes Startup for internet radio, it is a real pain, but I liked the idea so much that I wanted to make a separate version specifically for internet radio. I spent most of the day updating iTunes Startup to work for internet radio, and named the new version Radio Startup.

While I was working on Radio Startup, I noticed a few bugs that I had missed in iTunes Startup, so I fixed them, and updated the installation and setup directions. I also moved the download files to my new server. Check out the newest version of iTunes Startup here, and if you like listening to internet radio, check out Radio Startup here.

In 2006 I put together a little Automator application called Good Morning Music!, that has been very popular. I recently had an email from a user, asking if Good Morning Music! could be used for internet radio. I liked the idea so much, that I modified Good Morning Music!, specifically to handle radio, and renamed the program, here it is.
Radio Startup

Version: 1.03 (FREEWARE)
System Requirements - Macintosh Computer (PowerPC or Intel Processor), OS 10.4 or above
(c)2008 Garritt Hampton

Radio Startup is a simple Automator program intended to start your day off right. I like to start my workday with music, but I want it to start at a nice low-medium volume level. Radio Startup will set your computer volume and iTunes volume at a reasonable level, then begin playing a specified iTunes Radio Station for you, or if you would like, it will randomly pick a station from a list of stations you have chosen (For more information on this option, see the section entitled "MULTIPLE STATIONS" below).

Radio Startup will also work for podcast episodes, and stations not in the iTunes "Radio" menu. For podcasts, add selected episodes to the "Radio" playlist. For radio streams, just add the streaming MP3 to iTunes, then to the "Radio" playlist.

I have included the version 1.0.3 Radio Startup workflow to enable you to change volume or
playback settings or to adapt this workflow to do other things.

Important Note!

This version of "Radio Startup" has been successfully tested on a PowerPC Mac running OS 10.4.11. I have included the Automator Workflow in case there are compatibility issues. If you have problems with this program not running on later versions of OS 10, or on Intel Macs, please open the Automator Workflow, then re-save as an application. This should solve any compatibility issues. Also, the "Single Station" version of this program will only work with one station in the playlist, and the "Multiple Stations" version will only work with 2 or more stations in the playlist.

Sometimes we get so caught-up in the complicated aspects of SEO (Search Engine Optimization), and business in general, that we forget to do the simple things, and many times they can be really powerful.

I have dedicated much time and effort on this site, and on my personal blog, to explaining SEO, and giving easy-to-implement tips. These tips have helped many of my readers attain amazing Google rankings, very quickly. As an example of their power, When I launched this blog, neither "Renegade Marketing Strategies" or "Yvette Hampton" were ranked terms on Google (At least not YvetteHampton.com, there is some swimmer or runner who shows up). Within two weeks of launching this site, searching "Yvette Hampton", or "Renegade Marketing Strategies" yielded this site, as the first, unpaid result on Google. That is an amazing feat! While Google search rankings change almost daily, You will still find us at the top of the Google results (within the first page), although we move around a little bit every day.

Those are just the simplest search terms, but all of my sites perform equally well for more obscure search terms as well.

Daylight Savings time ends today, Sunday November 2. That means that you need to set your clocks back 1 hour. I won't go in to a long tirade about what an outdated idea Daylight Savings Time is, or how I believe it's part of a large government conspiracy to break down the will of the people and create mindless followers... That probably wouldn't be appropriate or beneficial here.

Adjust Your Wordpress Clock

I do want to pass on a tip for other Wordpress users though. Wordpress uses UTC for it's master clock, so depending on your timezone, you have to adjust how your blog's time is displayed on wordpress. UTC doesn't account for Daylight savings time, so you have to adjust your Wordpress clock back one hour today. For detailed instructions on how to do this, visit Heather's excellent tip on Wordpress.com.

Daylight savings time starts on May 8, 2009 and ends on November 1, 2009. I will post a reminder here next year.

Out of high school, at the age of 17, I had no clear direction on where I wanted my life to go (who really does at that age, anyway?). After attending a few classes at the local community college I decided that the military sounded like a good idea, so I joined and served in the United States Air Force for four years where I was trained as an aircraft electrician.

During my time in the Air Force, I learned many things about business. The first was that ANYTHING is possible. We performed seemingly impossible tasks daily, and never said, “that’s not my job”, or “I don’t think I can do that”. If there was a job to be done, no matter how complicated or how short the timeline, we found a way to do it. I also learned that I didn’t want to work for anyone but myself. So, after my departure from the Air Force, I decided to merge my love of music, and my love of not working for idiots, and I built and operated a small recording studio in the Los Angeles area. Along with the recording studio, my business partner and I started an independent record label.

I quickly learned that succeeding in business was so much more than knowing how to record or engineer music. As I began to understand what it took to establish, build and succeed in business, I quickly became intrigued by the world of business. I had taken business courses in college, but actually building a successful business as an entrepreneur was quite different than what I learned in the textbooks. My desire for a successful career caused me to dive in to every learning opportunity I could find. I began to read every business and marketing book I could get my hands on, went to training seminars, surrounded myself with other successful, some VERY successful, business owners, and learned a lot simply through trial and error. As I learned more about business, it became my passion. I love good business and good marketing, and I love the process of building systems and implementing the incremental, evolutionary, and revolutionary improvements that make a business great.
